Chapter Twelve

Ry found the leak. It was a busted pipe near the cottage. He found it because the ground was saturated and growing wetter in that area. A few shovelfuls of mud revealed the culprit. An old PVC pipe had shattered. It was closer to the surface than it probably should have been, and it was possible the freezing temperatures over the winter had finally done it in. With the water inside freezing, thawing, freezing again, the old pipe was weak and it’d had enough.

Unfortunately, considering how close the pipe was to the surface, he’d have to dig it up all the way to the main and then sink a new one deeper. Which meant it would take time. He’d ask Jenna if she knew of a good plumber tomorrow when they went over for the team get-together. It’d be faster to hire someone, though it’d cost a pretty penny too.

But how could he take his sweet ass time when Alaina was waiting for him to get it fixed?

When he thought of Alaina clinging to him, crying, telling him that maybe Everett would have been better off without her—well, he wanted to go find that asshole sperm donor and kick his nuts into his throat for him. If this Clint guy had manned up, he could have at least helped provide for his child, not pretend he didn’t exist and let Alaina struggle to get by.

Sweet Alaina, who’d had a shitty childhood of her own, who had a heart that didn’t quit, and who was determined to give her child the life she hadn’t had. One filled with love and acceptance, not indifference and violence. No wonder she hadn’t wanted Everett to come to the hospital. She knew what he would see, and it was too much to bear when she’d grown up the way she had.

He’d lost his sister when she’d taken her own life, and that’d been hard enough. She’d been three years older, and she’d doted on him. He’d been too young to realize she’d been depressed.

He couldn’t imagine his father shooting his mother and killing her. Altering his entire childhood for the worse. Being shuffled into a home where he wasn’t wanted. Being kicked out at eighteen and told he was on his own, then being turned away when he had a tiny baby to care for and needed them most.

Shitty people, all of them. Except Alaina’s mother, who’d found the courage to finally leave an abusive situation.

Ry turned off the water to the cottage so it didn’t keep leaking, then went to knock on the door. Alaina was inside, putting hers and Everett’s things away. She opened the door, and his heart did a little flip thing in his chest. She’d changed from jeans to a pair of leggings and a gray workout jacket that zipped up. Her hair was in a ponytail, and her pretty green eyes were warm and welcoming. She wasn’t afraid of him, or wary. Not that she had a reason to be, but he was glad to see the friendliness in her gaze when she looked at him.
